Events & Activities

Providing guidance for you to reach out and locate opportunities that are suitable for you! Ranging from fun activities with the seniors, research opportunities, and fundraising/advocacy ideas.

Arts and Craft

We have no doubt in saying that 90% of female seniors will have the skills of knitting and crocheting. The new social media trend of 'knit your own cute summer top' might be the perfect conversation starter between you and the senior!

Appreciation of students performances

Students who are interested in a small musical performance can definitely do so. Nursing homes are often very supportive of music, as it plays an integral part in residents' lives and has a biological impact on their wellbeing and health.

Check out this article to learn about how music has an impact on Senior health!

StandingTall

'StandingTall is a digital exercise program developed by fall prevention and exercise specialists at NeuRA (Neuroscience Research Australia). It has been co-designed with over 1500 older adults to ensure it’s easy to use, engaging, and effective.' (Standingtall.net.au)

Cosy Companion is partnering with StandingTall to encourage volunteers to support and accompany suitable residents in doing standing tall exercises.

Enabling effective physical activity that will empower older Australians to reduce their chances of falls can make a huge difference!

Activities

1

Simple Musical performances

If you have even the simplest abilities in playing a musical instrument, implement your musical skills to provide entertainment for seniors. Hearing live music, despite it's actual proficiency, can be extremely entertaining and enjoyable for them. Research has also proven that listening to music stimulates neurons, in which support brain activity!

2

Boardgames and Mahjong

Board games are fun to play, no matter how old you are! Embrace your festive and competitive nature when playing Scrabble, Chinese Checkers and numerous other games!

Numerous nursing homes will have these games, facilitators; however, if you're unsure of how to play these games..

Here is a guide:

Dog Walks and Lolly Trolly

If you're interested in taking part in having a time with fluffy companions and sharing delicious treats, taking the time to discuss with volunteer coordinators about these activities would be wonderful!

Please feel free to check out the guide below on integrating these activities within your nursing home!

Wahroonga's HammondCare journey

As the founder of Cosy Companion, I was particularly inspired from my experience volunteering with HammondCare Wahroonga for the past year and a half. This was a dementia home that had beautiful residents. I thoroughly enjoyed my encounters of joy during the small interactions of music and knitting/crocheting.

Abbotsleigh's Visit to Roden Cutler Lodge

In August 2025, a few Abbotsleigh got to visit Gordon's Roden Cutler lodge from last year's immersion week experience.

They interacted with several seniors, including some that we recognised from immersion week, and presented a 'show and tell' activity with the residents!
